Hope is a dangerous thing.

Hope is a double edged sword, It might benefit you, it might disappoint you. I pondered and thought much about it and i still can't come to a conclusion should I still believe in "HOPE" ? October 2007, i placed much hope, i gave it my best, i worked hard just to be denied in the end because of my moments of folly back back then in 2006. I guess my best was not enough. I placed much hope in appealling only to be shot down back to earth with a simple email. I found out some people weren't that good after all but they still had a shot at it why wasn't I given the same opportunity. I wrote my appeal with much sincerity and hope that the result would be in my favour.

But hope is a dangerous thing, and it is still now, I have so much hope in my future plans and i wouldn't want the same outcome to befall me. My hope equates to much optimism that i have and see things, which I "hope" will turn out fine.

Everytime I hoped for something and i don't get it i perceive it as failure on my part. Instead of succumbing to the self -pitying nature of man; instead of looking forward, he tends to dwell on the past and hence a failed man always lives in his shadow. It is human nature to hope for the best.

Which bring me to the point of "Hope is a dangerous thing"; never put in too much hope or you'll get stabbed; the very soul gets wounded. Rather then wallowing in self pity and never rise after tasting failure. Why not hope for the best and work towards it. This has been the case for me hope for the best and work towards it, but i feel that my best isn't my all maybe that why hope became a dangerous thing .

Successful people tell others to rise after a failure. But how many people actually rise after a failure and recover from that shock and wounds to the soul? Maybe that is why theres only a handful of successful people? Certainly it is painful to try to rise after a failure and get shot down again and rise again.

With so much hope i have, i just "HOPE" that what i've done to realize those hope actually materialize and happen.

I really hope that i could become a role model or even a learning example and i definitely fear failure as Winston Churhill onced said that, " The price of greatness is responsibilty " the greater the responsibility, the greater the ill effects of failure are felt. Having approximately 120 young impressionable young minds under you does instill a sense of responsibility coupled with my sense of duty, obligation and the passion to serve on i fear the reprecussion of failure but HOPING too much as i said is just as dangerous.

With that it has further galvanized my conviction to "Do the best in everything you do, if you know that you have done your best there won't be regrets" but tucked in the corner of my heart theres always resentment and regrets. Maybe that the self pitying nature of men that we have to be careful of.

So much for my 2 cents worth. I began to ponder on with other motion "The beginning of wisdom is fear?"

Reading post on some of my old friends blog. Suddenly i felt nostalgic. I don't know why. I'm feeling regretful. Things weren't like last time, I've noticed every one's growing up. News of death start popping up. Friends starts to get distant. *Sad* Time moving pretty fast and waits for no man. What if certain things when this way? What if i did this? I wonder what the outcome would be... really i ponder what would have happened if certain things go certain way instead of now. Things would probably be very different.

I'm working tmr, i wonder why I'm working. Just to past time and keep me preoccupied i guess. No use regretting huh? But really "what if?" If only i got that chance and opportunity.

Since then I've been giving my all starting this year, at least i no i have given my best and would never get that unpleasant regretful feeling ever. But every time i reminiscence about the past, all the memories floods back.

Ok... had dinner at Manhattan fish market on Friday nite... had grilled catch of the day with butter rice ... Yum Yum not only that shared Grilled platter for two shared with 4 ppl. the Grilled catch of the day wasnt enuff i guess... But i got too full by the time i shared the platter for 2.... Den the area near my appendix was hurting. Got this sharp pain which comes and goes. I was seriously full and bloated after that and i burped alot and the pain returned. Pain it sucks. Watched 12.25am show at tm after tat. Watched Chuck and Larry funni movie. The pain's gone for now. I think i should go for a CAT scan

Been waking up early at 7 these past few days for work. On Wednesday had a trainee under me tapping calls and handling calls. I think he's a pitiful person. He's 4 yrs older than me, but his qualification stops at secondary school but he looks like my age 18-19 didn't expect that certainly enlightening to hear his story. Work certainly has interesting people with interesting life story.

Tmr I'm on standby weeeee gonna wake up late man... have a craving to eat double cheese burger w/o pickles and no tomato sauce but put big mac sauce and fillet of fish w/o tartar add extra cheese with mayo instead. And Ice Cream hahahahaha, sinful indulgence i better stop myself from indulging man.

Appendicitis

The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the first part of the large intestine, also called the colon. The appendix is located in the lower right portion of the abdomen. It has no known function. Removal of the appendix appears to cause no change in digestive function.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Once it starts, there is no effective medical therapy, so appendicitis is considered a medical emergency. When treated promptly, most patients recover without difficulty. If treatment is delayed, the appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis is the most common acute surgical emergency of the abdomen. Anyone can get appendicitis, but it occurs most often between the ages of 10 and 30.

Causes

The cause of appendicitis relates to blockage of the inside of the appendix, known as the lumen. The blockage leads to increased pressure, impaired blood flow, and inflammation. If the blockage is not treated, gangrene and rupture (breaking or tearing) of the appendix can result.

Most commonly, feces blocks the inside of the appendix. Also, bacterial or viral infections in the digestive tract can lead to swelling of lymph nodes, which squeeze the appendix and cause obstruction. This swelling of lymph nodes is known as lymphoid hyperplasia. Traumatic injury to the abdomen may lead to appendicitis in a small number of people. Genetics may be a factor in others. For example, appendicitis that runs in families may result from a genetic variant that predisposes a person to obstruction of the appendiceal lumen.

Symptoms

Symptoms of appendicitis may include

pain in the abdomen, first around the belly button, then moving to the lower right area
loss of appetite
nausea
vomiting
constipation or diarrhea
inability to pass gas
low fever that begins after other symptoms
abdominal swelling

Not everyone with appendicitis has all the symptoms. The pain intensifies and worsens when moving, taking deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing. The area becomes very tender. People may have a sensation called "downward urge," also known as "tenesmus," which is the feeling that a bowel movement will relieve their discomfort. Laxatives and pain medications should not be taken in this situation. Anyone with these symptoms needs to see a qualified physician immediately.

People With Special Concerns

Patients with special conditions may not have the set of symptoms above and may simply experience a general feeling of being unwell. Patients with these conditions include

people who use immunosuppressive therapy such as steroids
people who have received a transplanted organ
people infected with the HIV virus
people with diabetes
people who have cancer or who are receiving chemotherapy
obese people

Pregnant women, infants and young children, and the elderly have particular issues.

Abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting are more common during pregnancy and may or may not be the signs of appendicitis. Many women who develop appendicitis during pregnancy do not experience the classic symptoms. Pregnant women who experience pain on the right side of the abdomen need to contact a doctor. Women in their third trimester are most at risk.

Infants and young children cannot communicate their pain history to parents or doctors. Without a clear history, doctors must rely on a physical exam and less specific symptoms, such as vomiting and fatigue. Toddlers with appendicitis sometimes have trouble eating and may seem unusually sleepy. Children may have constipation, but may also have small stools that contain mucus. Symptoms vary widely among children. If you think your child has appendicitis, contact a doctor immediately.

Older patients tend to have more medical problems than young patients. The elderly often experience less fever and less severe abdominal pain than other patients do. Many older adults do not know that they have a serious problem until the appendix is close to rupturing. A slight fever and abdominal pain on one's right side are reasons to call a doctor right away.

All patients with special concerns and their families need to be particularly alert to a change in normal functioning and patients should see their doctors sooner, rather than later, when a change occurs.

Diagnosis

Medical History and Physical Examination

Asking questions to learn the history of symptoms and a careful physical examination are key in the diagnosis of appendicitis. The doctor will ask many questions—much like a reporter—trying to understand the nature, timing, location, pattern, and severity of pain and symptoms. Any previous medical conditions and surgeries, family history, medications, and allergies are important information to the doctor. Use of alcohol, tobacco, and any other drugs should also be mentioned. This information is considered confidential and cannot be shared without the permission of the patient.

Before beginning a physical examination, a nurse or doctor will usually measure vital signs: temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Usually the physical examination proceeds from head to toe. Many conditions such as pneumonia or heart disease can cause abdominal pain. Generalized symptoms such as fever, rash, or swelling of the lymph nodes may point to diseases that wouldn't require surgery.

Examination of the abdomen helps narrow the diagnosis. Location of the pain and tenderness is important. Pain is a symptom described by a patient; tenderness is the response to being touched. Two signs, called peritoneal signs, suggest that the lining of the abdomen is inflamed and surgery may be needed: rebound tenderness and guarding. Rebound tenderness is when the doctor presses on a part of the abdomen and the patient feels more tenderness when the pressure is released than when it is applied. Guarding refers to the tensing of muscles in response to touch. The doctor may also move the patient's legs to test for pain on flexion of the hip (psoas sign), pain on internal rotation of the hip (obturator sign), or pain on the right side when pressing on the left (Rovsing's sign). These are valuable indicators of inflammation but not all patients have them.

Laboratory Tests

Blood tests are used to check for signs of infection, such as a high white blood cell count. Blood chemistries may also show dehydration or fluid and electrolyte disorders. Urinalysis is used to rule out a urinary tract infection. Doctors may also order a pregnancy test for women of childbearing age (those who have regular periods).

Imaging Tests

X rays, ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) scans can produce images of the abdomen. Plain x rays can show signs of obstruction, perforation (a hole), foreign bodies, and in rare cases, an appendicolith, which is hardened stool in the appendix. Ultrasound may show appendiceal inflammation and can diagnose gall bladder disease and pregnancy. By far the most common test used, however, is the CT scan. This test provides a series of cross-sectional images of the body and can identify many abdominal conditions and facilitate diagnosis when the clinical impression is in doubt. All women of childbearing age should have a pregnancy test before undergoing any testing with x rays.

In selected cases, particularly in women when the cause of the symptoms may be either the appendix or an inflamed ovary or fallopian tube, laparoscopy may be necessary. This procedure avoids radiation, but requires general anesthesia. A laparoscope is a thin tube with a camera attached that is inserted into the body through a small cut, allowing doctors to see the internal organs. Surgery can then be performed laparoscopically if the condition present requires it.

Treatment

Surgery

Acute appendicitis is treated by surgery to remove the appendix. The operation may be performed through a standard small incision in the right lower part of the abdomen, or it may be performed using a laparoscope, which requires three to four smaller incisions. If other conditions are suspected in addition to appendicitis, they may be identified using laparoscopy. In some patients, laparoscopy is preferable to open surgery because the incision is smaller, recovery time is quicker, and less pain medication is required. The appendix is almost always removed, even if it is found to be normal. With complete removal, any later episodes of pain will not be attributed to appendicitis.

Recovery from appendectomy takes a few weeks. Doctors usually prescribe pain medication and ask patients to limit physical activity. Recovery from laparoscopic appendectomy is generally faster, but limiting strenuous activity may still be necessary for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Most people treated for appendicitis recover excellently and rarely need to make any changes in their diet, exercise, or lifestyle.

Antibiotics and Other Treatments

If the diagnosis is uncertain, people may be watched and sometimes treated with antibiotics. This approach is taken when the doctor suspects that the patient's symptoms may have a nonsurgical or medically treatable cause. If the cause of the pain is infectious, symptoms resolve with intravenous antibiotics and intravenous fluids. In general, however, appendicitis cannot be treated with antibiotics alone and will require surgery.

Occasionally the body is able to control an appendiceal perforation by forming an abscess. An abscess occurs when an infection is walled off in one part of the body. The doctor may choose to drain the abscess and leave the drain in the abscess cavity for several weeks. An appendectomy may be scheduled after the abscess is drained.

Complications

The most serious complication of appendicitis is rupture. The appendix bursts or tears if appendicitis is not diagnosed quickly and goes untreated. Infants, young children, and older adults are at highest risk. A ruptured appendix can lead to peritonitis and abscess. Peritonitis is a dangerous infection that happens when bacteria and other contents of the torn appendix leak into the abdomen. In people with appendicitis, an abscess usually takes the form of a swollen mass filled with fluid and bacteria. In a few patients, complications of appendicitis can lead to organ failure and death.

Class chalet 2006

There was supposed to be a car in the porch, but azfar left home sending the two dumb dumb along. Tmr got sch la, need to study for bio mcq.

Cars were the most talked topic, Winning eleven was the most played game, my left thumb sore from playing alot got owned by justin and kelwin.

Reached resort on the 3rd at 1pm sorted and grouped the cadets. Everyone staying in standard room, bleah cheapskate room but cost rm 120 per nite deposot rm 200 so ex! Next they had stuff like flying fox rock climb etc i juz over look haha

Packed stuff to be brought up during the expedition again my bag lightest with all the ration given and extra ration. But the ration sucks; maggi instant cup noodle....eee im so sick of it. Also ate ramli tat nite as supper last time b4 i suffer (in terms of food that is)

Next morning i conducted warm up, den off we when, the teacher officer damn slow the river valley one tat is. Reach base camp at ard lunch time set up tent and it was free and easy. most of them had nothing to do after bathing they either gather talk cock or plae cards some even when to catch fish. rofl

Last time when i when we had a person named "bob" by me this time we had Mr Magoo...rofl literally mr magoo man

That nite no rain thank god, the tent was not that wet animore, had a good rest but now no more hyperthermia now i got fever once again medic power panadol saved me. climbing down the next day was a breeze...reach the resort had coke whahaha the cadets bathed using the public toilet we had room to bathe in, whahahha

Set off for singapore sleep through the bus journey, damn shiok.

Customs was a nitemare most of them got caught for smuggling chewing gum and bubblegum i had DVD, bubble gumand chewing gum in boxes. Was supposed to get caught but thnx to miscommunication plus huge crowd behind and smelly begs my bag got scott free. whahaha

Pluto Seems Poised to Lose Its Planet Status (it already has LOL)

Pluto was looking more and more like a goner today as astronomers meeting in Prague continued to debate the definition of a planet.

“I think that today can go down as the ‘day we lost Pluto,’ ” Jay Pasachoff of Williams College said in an e-mail message from Prague.

Under fire from other astronomers and the public, a committee appointed by the International Astronomical Union revised and then revised again a definition proposed last week that would have expanded the number of official planets to 12, locking in Pluto as well as the newly discovered Xena in the outer solar system, as well as the asteroid Ceres and Pluto’s moon Charon.

The new definition offered today would set up a three-tiered classification scheme with eight “planets”; a group of “dwarf-planets” that would include Pluto, Ceres, Xena and many other icy balls in the outer solar system; and thousands of “smaller solar system bodies,” like comets and asteroids.

The bottom line, said Owen Gingerich, the Harvard astronomer who is chairman of the I.A.U.’s planet definition committee, is that in the new definition, “Pluto is not a planet.”

“There’s not happiness all around, believe me,” he added.

The new proposal was hashed out in a couple of open meetings, the first of which was described by participants as tumultuous, and the second more congenial. Astronomers are supposed to vote on this or some other definition on Thursday, but whether a consensus is emerging depends on whom you talk to. Some astronomers expressed anger that the original definition of planet had been developed in isolation and then dropped on them only a week before the big vote. Others continued to question whether it was so important to decide the question now at all.

Among its defects, some astronomers say, the newer definition abandons any pretense of being applicable to other planetary systems beyond our own solar system.

To many astronomers, Pluto’s tiny size and unusually tilted orbit make it a better match to the icy balls floating in the outskirts of the solar system in what is known as the Kuiper Belt than to the conventional planets like Jupiter and Mars. The issue has been forced on astronomers by the discovery of such a ball even larger than Pluto, nicknamed Xena by its discoverer, Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology.

If Pluto is a planet, so should be Xena, Dr. Brown has argued.

The committee’s original prime criterion was roundness, meaning that a planet had to be big enough so that gravity would overcome internal forces and squash it into a roughly spherical shape. But a large contingent of astronomers, led by Julio Fernandez of the University of the Republic in Montevideo, Uruguay, has argued that a planet must also be massive enough to clear other objects out of its orbital zone. Dr. Gingerich admitted, “They are in control of things.”

So the newest resolution includes the requirement for orbital dominance as a condition for full-fledged planethood, Dr. Gingerich said. That knocks out Pluto, which crosses the orbit of Neptune, and Xena, which orbits among the icy wrecks of the Kuiper Belt, and Ceres, which is in the asteroid belt.

“Vociferous objectors have said they could accept this,” Dr. Gingerich said.

Reached in his office at Caltech, Dr. Brown, who as the discoverer of Xena has the most to lose by its and Pluto’s demotion, said he thought he could live with the new proposal. “It essentially demotes Pluto to something other than a real planet, which is reasonable,” he wrote in an e-mail.

Dr. Gingerich cautioned that there were many things still to be sorted out. For example, the International Astronomical Union might consider creating a special name for Pluto and other dwarf-planets, like Xena and others yet to be discovered, that dwell out beyond Neptune. If it did, he said that “plutonians” seemed like a likelier choice than the previous suggestion, “plutons.” That term was protested by geologists, who pointed out that it was already used in earth science for nuggets of molten rock that have solidified and reached the surface.

But with two more days before the scheduled vote, there was no guarantee Pluto would not make a comeback and the definition of planethood be rewritten again.

“Some people think that the astronomers will look stupid if we can’t agree on a definition or if we don’t even know what a planet is,’’ Dr. Pasachoff said. “But someone pointed out that this definition will hold for all time and that it is more important to get it right.”

A Ring Tone Meant to Fall on Deaf Ears

In that old battle of the wills between young people and their keepers, the young have found a new weapon that could change the balance of power on the cellphone front: a ring tone that many adults cannot hear.

In settings where cellphone use is forbidden — in class, for example — it is perfect for signaling the arrival of a text message without being detected by an elder of the species.

"When I heard about it I didn't believe it at first," said Donna Lewis, a technology teacher at the Trinity School in Manhattan. "But one of the kids gave me a copy, and I sent it to a colleague. She played it for her first graders. All of them could hear it, and neither she nor I could."

The technology, which relies on the fact that most adults gradually lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, was developed in Britain but has only recently spread to America — by Internet, of course.

Recently, in classes at Trinity and elsewhere, some students have begun testing the boundaries of their new technology. One place was Michelle Musorofiti's freshman honors math class at Roslyn High School on Long Island.

At Roslyn, as at most schools, cellphones must be turned off during class. But one morning last week, a high-pitched ring tone went off that set teeth on edge for anyone who could hear it. To the students' surprise, that group included their teacher.

"Whose cellphone is that?" Miss Musorofiti demanded, demonstrating that at 28, her ears had not lost their sensitivity to strangely annoying, high-pitched, though virtually inaudible tones.

"You can hear that?" one of them asked.

"Adults are not supposed to be able to hear that," said another, according to the teacher's account.

She had indeed heard that, Miss Musorofiti said, adding, "Now turn it off."

The cellphone ring tone that she heard was the offshoot of an invention called the Mosquito, developed last year by a Welsh security company to annoy teenagers and gratify adults, not the other way around.

It was marketed as an ultrasonic teenager repellent, an ear-splitting 17-kilohertz buzzer designed to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected.

The principle behind it is a biological reality that hearing experts refer to as presbycusis, or aging ear. While Miss Musorofiti is not likely to have it, most adults over 40 or 50 seem to have some symptoms, scientists say.

While most human communication takes place in a frequency range between 200 and 8,000 hertz (a hertz being the scientific unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second), most adults' ability to hear frequencies higher than that begins to deteriorate in early middle age.

"It's the most common sensory abnormality in the world," said Dr. Rick A. Friedman, an ear surgeon and research scientist at the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles.

But in a bit of techno-jujitsu, someone — a person unknown at this time, but probably not someone with presbycusis — realized that the Mosquito, which uses this common adult abnormality to adults' advantage, could be turned against them.

The Mosquito noise was reinvented as a ring tone.

"Our high-frequency buzzer was copied. It is not exactly what we developed, but it's a pretty good imitation," said Simon Morris, marketing director for Compound Security, the company behind the Mosquito. "You've got to give the kids credit for ingenuity."

British newspapers described the first use of the high-frequency ring tone last month in some schools in Wales, where Compound Security's Mosquito device was introduced as a "yob-buster," a reference to the hooligans it was meant to disperse.

Since then, Mr. Morris said his company has received so much attention — none of it profit-making because the ring tone was in effect pirated — that he and his partner, Howard Stapleton, the inventor, decided to start selling a ring tone of their own. It is called Mosquitotone, and it is now advertised as "the authentic Mosquito ring tone."

David Herzka, a Roslyn High School freshman, said he researched the British phenomenon a few weeks ago on the Web, and managed to upload a version of the high-pitched sound into his cellphone.

He transferred the ring tone to the cellphones of two of his friends at a birthday party on June 3. Two days later, he said, about five students at school were using it, and by Tuesday the number was a couple of dozen.

"I just made it for my friends. I don't use a cellphone during class at school," he said.

How, David was asked, did he think this new device would alter the balance of power between adults and teenagers? Or did he suppose it was a passing fad?

"Well, probably it is," said David, who added after a moment's thought, "And if not, I guess the school will just have to hire a lot of young teachers."

It just slips out of your hand. Exams approaching. 'O'and 'A' level looming soon too, imsure they are press for time with revisions and past years paper to complete. Good luck guys! Can't wait for it to be over huh? Trust me i want it to be over too, then we can go movies again!
